If you are still having a problem with this update then make sure you have done the following items. Several of these were suggested in this thread, but I thought it would be good to consolidate them. Verify that you have Vista Service Pack 2 installed. Scan your system for virus malware infections. This link gives some good information for this: Then you can and then run Windows Update. Install the and then test. Download and manually install the pieces of the update individually.
The same is valid for Windows Server 2008, with only SP2 being supported for the DirectX upgrade introduced with the Platform Update for Windows Vista, and RTM-SP1 being ignored completely.
When doing this, verify that you are downloading the appropriate version (x86 for 32bit systems and x64 for 64bit systems). Disable antivirus firewall programs during the download of the packages. If some of the updates install then reboot and run Windows update again. It is possible that your system doesn’t need all four and KB971644 may not be offered after installing some of the components. Click to expand.Anywhere else I can download it from? I did the validation process and the nonsense says it's unable to determine whether my copy of Windows is genuine or not. Edit: And now my Windows says it's not activated, now I'm disturbed. There are only 2 answers to this.
1 - Vista is glitched as hell, 2 - This is only temporary until I restart because I'm in the middle of a Windows update. Edit 2: Yes it was the Windows update that left it in that state. I restarted and now that everything is finished updating everything is back to normal. An important note I should mention, SP2 fixes a LOT of glitches in Vista.
For 99.9% of my programs I always had to have driver signature enforcement disabled which lead to a plethora of glitches up the ass which annoyed me to no end. Most people don't run into these glitches because they only seem to happen when driver signature enforcement is disabled. One of the most annoying glitches was that Windows wouldn't properly save window settings so they could not memorize where to open or what settings to use for the items in them.
